Abstract

the author has examined the 7.983 sealed teeth of -1,659 patients in order to estimate the retention rate of sealants applied with light curing method by general practitioners. The materials were selected among the outpaients who have had over
once
experiences to visit the dept. of preventive dentistry, Dental hospital of Dankook University, over a times from 1986 to 1992, for checking the sealant removal. Every sealed teeth were examined for sealants retention in terms of patient's
visiting
interval. @ES The obtained results were as follows.
@EN 1. The retention rate of pit and fissure sealant applied to the permanent teeth revealed decreasing tendency as time flows as 98.4% on 3 months, 95.1% on 6 months, 93.5% in 1 year, 89.5% in 2 years, 75.9% in 3 years, 77.6% in 4 years, and 5
years
later, 58.8%.
2. It was estimated that retention rate decreased considerably in 3 years later, so periodic examinations of sealants removal would be needed.
3. It was recognized the retention rate levels of sealants in the primary teeth decreased as time progress.
4. It was estimated that the retention rate were more or less higher in upper and permanent teeth than in lower and primary teeth.
5. It was noted that the retention rate was lower in re-sealed teeth than in ordinary sealed.
6. The caries prevention effects of pit and fissure sealing on individual teeth were estimated as 80 to 90%, compared with the data from national survey.
